Synopsis: When retired postmaster Edwin Quill is found murdered inside the Valley Falls post office, police discover five undeliverable letters hidden in his desk. Each letter is connected to someone Quill encountered during his final week, and each person had a reason to want him dead.
Shortly before his murder, Quill received an anonymous message claiming that someone inside the post office had been stealing valuables from undeliverable mail. He quietly began investigating and used the five letters to record what he discovered.
The truth is that one suspect had been searching abandoned mail for years, looking for a particular letter containing evidence of an old crime. Quill found it first and recognized the person named inside.
